In every workplace, role models have the power to shape the culture, inspire confidence, and drive positive change. While we often hear about the importance of female role models, the impact of positive male role models is equally significant, especially in fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and ethical work environment.

As a woman who’s driven, looking to accelerate her career and has big ambitions to succeed, I have had not only really great female role models but also some truly supportive male role models (both professionally and personally) who have helped me to develop and grow. These are men who have always had my best interests at heart, who genuinely want to empower me and see me do well.

While it’s important to have like-minded women to help with empowerment, for me it’s been just as important to have allies and support from my male peers and seniors. They bring different perspectives, have taught me alternative ways to approach certain scenarios, and can often be helpful in getting my voice heard in ways that have made a real difference in my career.

Shaping culture and inspiring confidence

Positive male role models lead by example. Through collaboration, transparency, and nurturing talent, they help create workplaces where everyone feels valued and supported.

Some of the best line managers I’ve had have been male, and have consistently championed transparency, never undermined me and my abilities, and offered practical advice when asked.

Male leadership doesn’t have to come at the expense of empathy. I think as life becomes more challenging, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the empathy and understanding shown when discussing topics that might not be in their natural comfort zone. We’re all human, all have our own ‘stuff’ going on, but listening and fostering a culture of openness are key to effective leadership.

These mentors also inspire confidence, encouraging others to take on challenges and trust their abilities. Their guidance helps individuals feel empowered to speak up, excel in their roles, and contribute meaningfully to team and organizational success. This impact isn’t limited to women; strong male role models uplift everyone around them.

My male mentors, in particular, have encouraged me to take on challenges, step into leadership roles, and trust in my abilities. Their belief in me has enabled me to overcome self-doubt and pursue opportunities I might otherwise have shied away from.

How women can recognise and celebrate their male mentors

As women, it’s crucial that we not only acknowledge but also actively celebrate the positive male role models who make a difference in our professional lives. Just as we advocate for more women in leadership and mentorship roles, we should also recognise the men who are making positive contributions in the workplace. These men, who champion inclusivity, lead with empathy, and inspire confidence, deserve our recognition and support.

By celebrating these male role models, we send a powerful message that positive leadership is not confined to one gender. It shows that strong, ethical role models are essential to creating a culture of respect, fairness, and opportunity for all.

A shared responsibility

For me, having strong role models, regardless of gender, has been crucial in helping me navigate my career with more and more confidence. I’ve seen firsthand the difference it makes when mentors lead with integrity, empathy, and transparency.

By acknowledging and celebrating the male mentors who have supported me, I hope to encourage a culture of collaboration, mutual growth, and inclusion. Recognising these positive role models helps create workplaces where everyone feels empowered to succeed and thrive.
