As a manager at Belasko in Guernsey, with offices across Jersey, Luxembourg, and the UK, I’ve come to appreciate that the principles of great teamwork don’t just shape internal culture; they directly impact the experience we deliver to our clients. When our teams operate with clarity, trust, and purpose, our clients benefit from seamless service, proactive support, and consistent results.

From rugby to the boardroom

Captaining the Guernsey Raiders has taught me that leadership isn’t about having the loudest voice, it’s about setting the tone and helping others perform at their best. On the pitch, every player knows their role, trusts the system, and commits to the team’s goal. That same clarity is vital in the workplace, especially when client service is on the line. Clear accountability ensures that each team member understands how their contribution supports the client journey, from onboarding to delivery and beyond.

Communication is the backbone of client success

In rugby, split-second decisions can change the game. That’s only possible with open, honest communication. In our business, strong communication across multi-jurisdictional teams ensures that information flows freely, feedback is embraced, and clients are never left in the dark. It’s not just about talking, it’s about listening to client needs, adapting to their evolving priorities, and responding with agility.

Challenge with purpose for the client’s benefit

One of the most rewarding aspects of leadership is helping individuals rise above their own expectations. Whether it’s pushing a teammate to dig deeper during a tough match or encouraging a colleague to take on a new responsibility, the goal is the same: to unlock potential. And when we do, our clients feel the difference with every interaction.

Striving for excellence: because our clients deserve it

Being at the top of your game isn’t a one-time achievement but a mindset. In sport, it means relentless training and tactical awareness. In business, it means staying sharp, embracing innovation, and never settling for “good enough.” High-performing teams don’t just thrive under pressure they deliver consistent excellence to clients, even when the stakes are high and the timelines are tight.

International Men’s Day is a moment to reflect on the values that shape us as professionals, teammates, and leaders. For me, it’s about showing up with integrity, lifting others, and leading with purpose.
